Echinacea was used originally by Native Americans. Studies, in Germany particularly, have highlighted the properties of Echinacea angustifolia and Echinacea purpurea, which are very similar. These studies, carried out in vitro, on animals, or in clinical pharmacology, indicate that the fresh plant has a real immunostimulant and anti - inflammatory activity in phagocytosis, capillary permeability, and neoformation of supportive tissue. Pathogenetic experimentation has confirmed the usefulness of Echinacea in severe infection and suppuration, with or without alteration of the general condition; this alteration may appear as exhaustion with drowsiness, confusion, aching sensations. A febrile syndrome associating irregular episodes, shivering with nausea, cold sweats, diffuse pains (head, abdomen) may also be present. Excretions are generally foul - smelling, and there is often lymphangitis associated with the local processes.
